UNION CITY, MI — Recovery continues after the deadly EF-3 tornado struck Sherwood and Union townships on March 6, with Union City Community Schools serving as the relief hub.
Signs on the high school doors direct those needing assistance to coordinators, while school staff and local volunteers remain ready to respond.
State Rep. Jennifer Wortz attended the Monday, April 20 school board meeting to read a legislative resolution she, Rep. Steve Frisbie, and Sen. Jon Lindsey submitted on behalf of the community’s efforts.

The school’s principal and crisis team began their efforts the Saturday after the Friday night storm, which first struck west of town—where three people died—before moving into the village.
Wortz added personal remarks, citing the community response as a model. She recalled visiting shortly after the storm and expressed amazement at the organization and support she witnessed.
Wortz emphasized the resilience, unity, and solidarity of Union City residents and offered sympathy, along with a continued commitment to supporting long-term recovery.
Union City schools are part of the Calhoun Intermediate School District. Superintendent Jerry Johnson told the board on Monday night, “In a small community, that’s where you get to see who’s really there for you when you need it, and you all demonstrated that day in and day out.”

Union Lake Association Donation
The Union Lake Association donated $10,000 to the coalition led by Union City Community Schools for tornado victim relief.
Association President Gary Chester and Treasurer Ken Bell told the Union Township board on April 14 that the association also committed funds to cleaning up storm debris in the lake.
Both emphasized that these activities use only association funds, not special assessment funds.
