Pick the LSJ girls high school athlete of week: May 25-30

Here is a look at the latest individuals in the running to be voted the Lansing State Journal’s girls high school athlete of the week.

Voting is open until noon Wednesday, June 3 to determine a winner, who will be featured in the LSJ.

Cayla Hawkins, East Lansing track

The freshman finished as the state champion in the 400 at the Division 1 state finals. Hawkins finished with a personal best time of 52.89 seconds. She was also part of 1,600 and 800 relays that finished third at the Division 1 finals.

Emily Peters, Olivet track

The senior helped the Eagles capture a second consecutive MHSAA Division 3 team state title. She was the champion in the 300 hurdles with a time of 44.0 seconds and the runner-up in the 100 hurdles with a season-best time of 14.83 seconds. Peters was also part of Olivet’s state champion 400 and 800 relay teams. Peters ends her career as a four-time state champion in the 300 hurdles.

Jayda Stowell, Lansing Catholic tennis

The senior captain was part of a No. 3 doubles tandem that reached the state semifinals at the Division 3 state meet before falling to the top seed in three sets.. She contributed to the Cougars placing ninth as a team. Stowell had a 43-4 record in her varsity career.
