Gasoline prices in Michigan have dropped 27 cents since last week, averaging $4.38 a gallon, AAA-The Auto Group announced Monday.
That is 20 cents less than a month ago and $1.28 higher compared to the same time in 2025, officials said.
GasBuddy reported the national price Monday at $4.26, a 20-cent decline since last week. The price in Michigan is about $4.26 a gallon, according to the Dallas-based fuel tracker.
Motorists in Michigan are paying an average of $66 for a full 15-gallon tank, AAA reported.
What’s driving the trend
“Average gasoline prices declined in all 50 states over the last week, with GasBuddy now tracking 15 states where the average price of gasoline has fallen below $4 per gallon, offering motorists some of the most widespread relief seen in weeks,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.
“Much of the decline was driven by falling oil prices and the unwinding of recent price cycles, as growing optimism surrounding a potential U.S.-Iran agreement helped ease concerns over global oil supplies. Diesel prices also posted a substantial decline, falling more than 15 cents per gallon nationally.”
The gas company reported the national average price of diesel dipped 16 cents compared to a week ago, to $5.44 per gallon.
De Haan said “the coast is anything but clear” as far as fluctuating prices.
“Oil prices edged higher Sunday evening as uncertainty surrounding a potential deal persisted and renewed Israeli attacks added another layer of geopolitical risk,” he said. “While motorists may continue to see some short-term relief, some price-cycling states could soon experience another upward swing as retailers run out of room to lower prices further. Overall, any setback in negotiations could quickly reverse the recent decline in fuel prices.”
Michigan’s gas prices have been hit harder than most other states due to regional refinery problems that are starting to ease.
Gas prices around the state
GasBuddy said Detroit’s pump price on Monday was $4.33, according to its survey of 1,734 stations in the city. That is 51 cents lower than last month and $1.25 per gallon higher than a year ago.
According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Detroit was $3.79. The lowest in the state was priced at $3.45 Sunday, while the most expensive in the city and state reached $5.99.
Metro Detroit’s current average is $4.39 per gallon, AAA said. That is a quarter more than last week and $1.27 above the same time a year ago.
The most expensive gas price averages are in Traverse City ($4.48), Ann Arbor ($4.43) and Benton Harbor ($4.42).
The least expensive prices are in Flint ($4.15), Lansing ($4.19) and Marquette ($4.22).
“Michigan drivers are getting some relief at the pump, with gas prices down 27 cents from last week,” Adrienne Woodland, AAA’s spokesperson, said in a release Monday. “While the drop is welcome as we head into the busy summer travel season, fuel prices remain volatile and could shift again quickly.”
