A nutritional product for puppies sold nationwide is being recalled after the manufacturer said it could cause serious health issues in dogs.
Revival Animal Health said several of the milk replacement products it makes for puppies have variable levels of Vitamin D. Some of the products have low levels of the vitamin, others have elevated levels.
Dogs that ingest high levels of Vitamin D could develop symptoms such as vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst and urination, excessive drooling and weight loss, the company said.
Two customers have reported cases of rickets, a condition that causes bone to soften and weaken. The most common cause is Vitamin D insufficiency, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
At very high levels, excess Vitamin D also can lead to serious health issues including renal dysfunction.
Customers whose dogs were given the products and have exhibited symptoms should contact a veterinarian, said Revival Animal Health, which is based in Orange City, Iowa.
The products are sold online and in pet stores across the country under the brand names Breeder’s Edge Foster Care Canine and Shelter’s Choice. They come in multiple sizes of stand-up resealable bags and 12-ounce jars.
A full list of affected products can be found on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s website.
Anyone who purchased the affected products should not use them, but instead contact the company for a full refund. Revival Animal Health can be reached at 1-877-870-4059 from between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday to Friday Central Time.
