Popular fresh-baked maritozzi’s filled with mascarpone in chocolate hazelnut or vanilla bean, savory tortas, and luscious tarts are coming to Detroit’s east side.
On Friday, July 18, a second location of the highly acclaimed Warda Patisserie is set to open, with a delicious array of pastries.
James Beard Award-winning pastry chef and owner Warda Bouguettaya’s new space is at 1286 McClellan Ave. near Agnes Street in Detroit’s east side Little Village.
A Warda Patisserie Instagram post shouted out the new place officially opening, saying “new place, some new pastries, same us.”
Hours of Warda on the east side will be 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday-Sunday.
Little Village is a cultural corridor development in the East Village neighborhood. The area also houses a new wine and cocktail bar, Father Forgive Me, on the grounds of the Shepherd and the forthcoming Riverwards Produce. An Instagram post on Thursday by Father Forgive Me, welcomed Warda Patisserie, stating they will be serving several Warda items including strawberry cheesecake.
Warda’s new patisserie and cafe was announced months ago.
A native of Algeria, Bouguettaya in 2022 was awarded a James Beard Award for Outstanding Pastry Chef. Bouguettaya’s win at that time was the first time in nearly 30 years that a Detroit-based chef took home a James Beard Award, considered the most prestigious in culinary excellence. In 2020, Bouguettaya was named the Detroit Free Press/Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers Chef of the Year. It was 2021 when she opened her first location, Warda Pâtisserie, in Midtown.
Bouguettaya’s sweet pastry, as well as various savory items, are much sought after. Warda Patisserie focuses on sourcing local ingredients for her signature pastries, hand pies, quiche and savory items reflective of her life in Algeria and travels to France and Asia.
The space in Little Village is known as BridgeHouse and used as commercial space behind The Shepherd. Warda in Little Village will offer many signature items as well as breakfast and lunch items, additional rotating items along with coffee and tea.
