ERIE – New coach Devon Newman has been working hard at installing a new system for New Boston Huron’s volleyball team this fall.
It looks like it is working.
Her team opened the season by winning the Erie Mason Invitational on Thursday, Aug. 21.
“This definitely was validating,” Newman said. “It took us a while to trust it, but eventually they settled down.”
Huron avenged an earlier loss to Flat Rock in pool play by beating the Rams 17-25, 25-22, 15-8 in the finals.
“I’m excited for these girls,” Newman said. “They are very athletic and very hungry to play. It’s a fun group to coach.”
Huron logged wins over Jefferson and Erie Mason in pool play, then topped Mason 25-14, 25-22 in the semifinals to reach the championship match.
Simone Ciccotte was a force at the net for Huron. Ava Ryan set the ball well and Claire Ryan and Addison Beddow also played well.
Mason was 1-2 in pool play before falling to Huron in the semifinals.
Jayanna Willets, Addison Homrich and Paige Konrad led the Eagles.
PREP VOLLEYBALL
Airport sweeps quad
TECUMSEH – Airport got off to a strong start under new coach Janelle Nagy, but sweeping the Tecumseh Quad Wednesday.
The Jets beat Adrian Madison 26-24, 25-11, Onsted 25-9, 25-14 and Dundee 25-12, 25-19.
“We had a slow start, which was expected with some nerves and first-game jitters, but we quickly bounced back,” Nagy said. “In our very first set of the day, we were down 14–24 and fought our way back to win 26–24. That comeback showed our resilience, as we pulled together with controlled passing and fewer errors.”
Dundee’s only loss came against Airport. The Vikings beat Onsted 22-25, 25-18, 25-23 and Ypsilanti Lincoln 19-25, 25-23, 25-15.
Lilly Motylinski racked up 20 kills and broke the school record for career aces. Ella Fowler (11 kills, 23 assists), Lacey Evans (37 assists) and Sophia Nolff also played well.
Summerfield’s Samples shines
WHITMORE LAKE – Mia Samples served up 17 points, including 7 aces, and logged 8 digs to lead Summerfield past Genesee Christian 25-7, 25-20 and Whitmore Lake 25-16; 25-10 Thursday.
Maya Stone recorded 8 points and 11 digs, Bethany Suydam 16 digs, Jaeli Jones with 19 kills and Gabi Myshock adding 9 kills.
Summerfield’s junior varsity also won twice led by Kennidi Bork (9 aces) and Sophia LaChappelle (10 digs).
PREP SOCCER
Bishop scores four
FLAT ROCK – Luke Bishop scored four goals as Dundee opened its season with a 6-4 win over Flat Rock Wednesday.
The Vikings jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Flat Rock came roaring back to tie the score. John Trejo and freshman Mason Cousino had the other goals for the winners and center backs Braxton Ellison and Jaxson Arecheja played well.
“Flat Rock is a good team that really battled us to the end,” Dundee coach Richard Arecheja said.
Brady McBride had a pair of goals and Mac Mlotha and Zaiden Barker also found the back of the net for Flat Rock.
SMCC earns victory
MONROE – Joseph Lajiness and Carson Welker scored as St. Mary Catholic Central pulled out a 2-1 win over Blissfield Wednesday.
Assists went to Jacob St. Pierre and Spencer Shumate and Cameron Cole was strong in net for the Faldons.
“Blissfield was a difficult matchup for us, but I am proud of the way the boys responded defensively,” SMCC coach Jon Pederson said.
Hussey scores winner
NEW BOSTON – Matthew Hussey scored on a direct free kick from 35 yards out to give New Boston Huron a 2-1 win over Melvindale Wednesday.
Hussey also assisted on the other goal, the 96th of Ian Petrick’s career.
Jordan Stasak, Mason Jasinski, Ryan Marvaso and Shayne Diegel led the defense for the 4-0-1 Chiefs.
Fast start for Jefferson
NEWPORT – Jefferson is off to a 2-0 start for the first time since at least 2009 after Mauling Taylor Prep 8-1 Wednesday.
Sophomore Sawyer Schaffer rang up four goals and two assists, giving him seven goals in two games.
“He was a force up top for us, completely disrupting the defense,” Jefferson coach Bobby Smith said. “He is such a gifted finisher, anytime the defense gave him an inch of space, he was able to use his speed to create an opportunity and put the ball in the back of the net.”
Joey Peer (2 goals, 1 assist), Leeland Swan (2 goals), Cooper Jones (3 assists) and Jackson Vallie (6 saves) also had big games.
Monroe earns first win
MONROE – Cooper Robinson scored on a header and Nolan Rykse netted the winner as Monroe (1-2) nipped Airport 2-1 for its first victory of the season Thursday.
Luis Diaz assisted on both goals and Jake Steckmeyer and Colin Gray led the defense.
“Airport were determined and extremely difficult to break down,” Monroe coach Ian Cooke said. “They will be a handful for any opponent this season. Always satisfying to get the first win of the season on the board and hopefully we can build on this result.”
Skylar Gonzalez scored for Airport.
Browns excel for Milan
MILAN – Fred Brown and Charlie Brown each scored two goals and recorded an assist for Milan in a 5-1 win over Riverview Thursday.
Tanner Lambers finished with a goal and an assist.

Summerfield tops Ida
PETERSBURG – Brea Olmstead earned medalist honors with 37 and Payton Koraleski added a 45 to lead Summerfield past Ida 187-225 Wednesday.
Alyssa Torres shot 50 for Ida.
Tilley medalist for Airport
NEW BOSTON – Liv Tilley’s medalist round of 46 to carry Airport to a 228-244 win over New Boston Huron at Willow Metropark Wednesday.
Tilley was supported by Raegan Budzios (53), Maddyson Myers (64), Maddy Ciochon (65) and Kennady Kroll (65).
Huron got a 47 from Brooklyn Burke and a 60 from Elle Huffman.
Carlson wins jamboree
DEARBORN – Gibraltar Carlson shot 173 to beat Wyandotte Roosevelt, Southgate Anderson and Dearborn Edsel Ford in a Downriver League jamboree at Dearborn Hills Golf Course Wednesday.
Madilyn Peterson (34) and Juliana Guzman (37) of Carlson had the two lowest scores of the day.
Johnson tops Bedford
ANN ARBOR – Ella Johnson led Bedford for a round of 67 in a 203-276 loss to Ann Arbor Skyline Thursday.

Kliber-Weathers battle
MILAN – Will Kliber and Zach Weathers lost a three-set battle at No. 3 doubles for Milan in an 8-0 loss to Chelsea Wednesday.
SMCC stumbles
MONROE – St. Mary Catholic Central fell 7-0 to Tecumseh Thursday.
