Murphy to serve 3-15 years for sexual assault of a minor in Hillsdale

A former resident of Hillsdale County will serve 3-15 years in prison after pleading no contest to sexually assaulting a child, according to a release from Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel.

Kevin Murphy, 58, who most recently lived in Kentucky, was sentenced by Judge Sara Lisznyai in Hillsdale County’s 1st Circuit Court on one count of second-degree criminal sexual conduct involving a minor.

A second count of second-degree criminal sexual conduct involving a separate minor was dismissed as part of the sentencing agreement. The agreement preserves crime victim rights for both survivors, who were 9 and 12 at the time of the assaults, according to Nessel.

Murphy was originally charged by the Hillsdale County Prosecutor’s Office in October 2025. He was extradited from Kentucky to Michigan in March 2026 through Operation Survivor Justice, a partnership involving local prosecutors, the Michigan Department of Attorney General and the U.S. Marshals Service.

“It takes tremendous courage for survivors of sexual assault to come forward, especially at such a young age,” Nessel wrote in a statement in May. “I am incredibly grateful to the victims for their bravery and for the hard work of the (officials) involved in Operation Survivor Justice. Their efforts helped take a predator off our streets, and I hope this conviction brings the survivors a sense of justice and peace.”

Murphy will be subject to lifetime electronic monitoring and sex offender registration upon his release.
