With the new ruling that the NCAA must accept players from the 2022 recruiting class who had been thought to have previously exhausted their intercollegiate eligibility, it opened up all kinds of possibilities for players who could seek a final year to try and raise their star power. Such appears to be the case for former Columbia guard Kenny Noland.
Michigan basketball has had an open roster spot, with LJ Cason being the lone transfer out of the program, thus also ensuring that the Wolverines have needed some help in the backcourt. They appear to have gotten it, with Noland reportedly signing with the maize and blue on Wednesday, according to On3’s Pete Nakos.
Noland, of course, played at a lower level, having suited up in the Ivy League. But Michigan has had success in recent years with players from that level, with players such as forward Danny Wolf from Yale in 2024 and point guard Mike Smith in 2021, who was also from Columbia.
New Michigan basketball assistant coach Mike Martin, who came aboard after being the head coach at Brown for decades, of course, has familiarity with Noland. Against the Bears last season, Noland netted 18 points in the first matchup in Providence, and then 23 in New York — with the latter being among his most productive games of the season.
