MSU basketball opponent loses key starter for this upcoming season

One of the Spartans’ top non-conference opponents has been dealt some tough news this week.

Upcoming Michigan State opponent Gonzaga has lost its starting point guard ahead of the upcoming season. It was announced late last week that Mario Saint-Supery is leaving the program and returning to Spain to play in the Spanish League instead of at the college level. This move comes on the heels of the Zags also losing Jack Kayil to the NBA Draft — which was considered a surprise move.

Saint-Supery played in 35 games for the Zags during his freshman season, averaging 8.6 points and 3.8 assists across 23 minutes per game. He was a sharp shooter from outside as well, averaging over 40 percent from three-point range.

It was announced earlier this week that Michigan State will play Gonzaga in a neutral site non-conference game in December. The Spartans and Bulldogs will play in Palm Springs, Calif. on December 19.

The loss of Saint-Supery will certainly impact the Bulldogs for the upcoming season and makes the Spartans more of a favorite to win this marquee matchup. It should still be a good game, though, as Gonzaga is still projected to be a preseason top 20 team this year.
