WILLIS – Riverview’s focus was on defense.
The Pirates dropped 9 of its 11 players back on defense against New Boston Huron for the semifinals of the Division 2 Girls Soccer Regional at Ypsilanti Lincoln on Tuesday, June 2.
That wasn’t enough to stop Miley Skamiera.
The Huron senior pushed her school-record goal total to 45 to lead Huron to a 4-0 victory.
“She is really skilled,” Huron coach Matt Lividini said.
Riverview feared that skill after falling to Huron in the regular season 8-1 and 4-0 in a game that was halted at halftime because of bad weather.
The Pirates immediately packed their players tightly around the goal from the opening whistle.
“We kind of had an idea they might try something like that,” Lividini said. “It’s unfortunate that it happened in a Regional tournament.”
Huron put a dent into the Riverview strategy with two early goals.
Avery Turk opened the scoring by poking in a loose ball in front of the net following a corner kick by Skamiera at the 34:52 mark.
Skamiera made it 2-0 about six minutes later.
“I knew my girls would find a way to get through and score,” Lividini said. “This was a game were we just needed to score more goals than Riverview.”
Second-half scores came from Maggie Mentzner and Skamiera.
Huron carries a 17-3 record into the Regional championship game at 6 p.m. Thursday against Mason, which beat Farmington Hills Mercy 2-0 in the other semifinal.
