The Monroe County Library System’s summer reading theme is “Color Our World.”
“Summer reading is always an exciting time at the library. This year’s theme, ‘Color Our World,’ allows all 16 branches to showcase their creativity in programming,” said Stephanie Wintersteen, lead youth services technician. “We’re also incredibly grateful to Directions Credit Union for their continued generosity and support of our summer reading program.”
The program is designed to inspire and engage readers of all ages through a variety of artistic expressions. Special activities are planned and there are reading programs for children, teens and adults.
One of the activities, Cookies and Canvas, at Rasey Memorial Branch in Luna Pier, was a big hit with budding artists.
Jill Bennett, a children’s librarian and retired fourth grade teacher at Mason Central Elementary School, said participants, age 5 and older, recently created a flower picture with Mason art teacher Megan Swartz while eating cookies.
To find out about a program near you, log on to the library’s online calendar. Most events require registration.
Here are just a few of the events planned this summer.
Happening now through July 31 at Dorsch Memorial Branch, 18 E. First St. in Monroe — several downtown businesses will display a post with an act of kindness. Participants, age 16 and younger, are asked to write down the act of kindness to the corresponding business on the Summer Reading “Color Our World with Kindness” form. You can download or request a form from the Dorsch Memorial Library Branch. When the form is complete, return it to the Dorsch branch to be entered for a prize drawing on Aug. 1.
July 9 — Stained Glass Magic-Luna Pier Summer Lunch Bunch at Rasey Memorial Branch, 4349 Oak St. in Luna Pier. Planned from 12:30-2 p.m., participants will create a stained glass project with simple craft materials. No special skills required. Monroe Family YMCA Meal program is providing free healthy meals for kids and teens.
July 16 — Color Your World with Gratitude at Summerfield-Petersburg Branch, 60 E. Center St. in Petersburg. From 11 a.m.-noon, participants will learn about gratitude and making mixed media projects.
July 22 — Color Your World with Respect at Maybee Branch Library, 9060 Raisin St. in Maybee. From 11 a.m.-noon, participants will learn about respect and making word art.
