Michigan State president Kevin Guskiewicz leaving for Clemson

Michigan State University President Kevin Guskiewicz was named the president of Clemson University in South Carolina on Wednesday, May 27.

Clemson University’s Board of Trustees unanimously approved appointing Guskiewicz as Clemson’s 16th president at a virtual board meeting.

Trustee Cheri Phyfer at the board meeting said Guskiewicz had a “genuine kindness of leadership style” and is a renowned educator.

It’s unclear how long Guskiewicz will remain in his current role at MSU and when he will start at Clemson. Guskiewicz began his term as MSU’s president in March 2024.

Guskiewicz’s departure from Michigan State comes just three days after a deadline for MSU trustees to sign an updated code of ethics and conduct that two trustees argue is unconstitutional. Those two trustees didn’t sign the new policy, which was voted on during a late-night meeting on May 17, minutes after the new rules were announced publicly. The new policy limits the capacity in which trustees can communicate with the public.

Mike Balow, R-Plymouth, and Rema Vassar, D-Detroit, did not sign the agreement, according to reporting by the Lansing State Journal, and their credentials to this week’s Mackinac Policy Conference were revoked.

As a part of the updated Code of Conduct, any board member who does not sign the agreement would lose privileges, such as complimentary tickets for athletic events, discretionary travel budgets and legal protections.
