Pat Fitzgerald won a Big Ten recruiting battle for a key in-state prospect.
Don Spillers III from Detroit Martin Luther King picked Michigan State football over Illinois at a ceremony at his school on Monday, June 15. The three-star safety/athlete had Illinois as his other finalist and also had offers from Michigan, Maryland, Purdue and a number of other Power Four programs.
The 6-foot-2, 195-pound Spillers is ranked the No. 63 athlete and No. 881 overall player in the 2027 recruiting class according to 247Sports.com. He is considered the 14th-best prospect in the state.
Spillers also has played wide receiver and running back on offense, cornerback on defense and returns kicks and punts for the Crusaders. He also wrestled and ran track.
That gives Fitzgerald 15 commitments in his first full recruiting cycle after being hired Dec. 1. Spillers is the third player from Michigan to give his pledge, along with Brighton offensive tackle Jack Carlson and East Grand Rapids offensive lineman Grant Adloff. The 2027 class is ranked No. 39 overall.
