Michigan HC Dusty May leaving Wolverines to coach the Dallas Mavericks

Well, that didn’t last long. Dusty May joined Michigan basketball in the spring of 2024, and just over two years later, he will officially use the success he had in Ann Arbor as a springboard to jump to the next level. According to Shams Charania of ESPN, May is leaving the Wolverines to become the next head coach of the Dallas Mavericks, taking over for Jason Kidd under new President Masai Ujiri.

Credit where it’s due, while May became a major heel to Michigan State fans with some jabs and trolling at the Spartans in the two years he was with the Wolverines, May did put together a formidable team of transfers that won the 2026 National Championship. Michigan will now need to scramble to find a suitable replacement for the most successful basketball coach they’ve found in the modern era (no offense to the legendary John Beilein).

May will jump ship to the Mavericks, where he will take over a rebuilding team that is centered around star player Cooper Flagg.
