ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The Michigan football team was relatively healthy entering the Week 8 game against Washington, but left the game decidedly less so.
Multiple players didn’t play — running back Justice Haynes, safeties Rod Moore and Brandyn Hillman, and tight ends Marlin Klein and Hogan Hansen. And in-game, Evan Link and Ernest Hausmann both left with injuries. After the game, head coach Sherrone Moore updated some of the player injuries, and noted that for Link, it could be a long-term situation.
“So Evan, not really sure. Doesn’t look too good,” Moore said. “I know it was a lower body thing, but we’ll see. We’ll see how he does.
“And Justice and Rod were game-time decisions. They practiced throughout the week. And we always err on the side of, even sometimes when they want to go, making sure that they’re full strength before we do anything. So they’re game-time decisions.”
Moore continued, noting that Hausmann is OK after he left the game in the second half.
As for Rod Moore and Justice Haynes, he says that they’ve both been preparing to play — and both were dressed in full uniform before the game — but neither were healthy enough to make a go of it once kickoff arrived.
“Yeah, that was just a game-time decision,” Moore said. He was practicing these past couple days. But again, it’s like we’re always going to do whatever’s in the best interest of the kid, even if they want to go. So he probably could have went, but we just felt like it wasn’t that time.”
Haynes was listed on the injury report, but Moore, Brandyn Hillman, and Hogan Hansen were not.
Even so, the Wolverines’ head coach shared why some players haven’t made it onto the report and end up being scratches just before the game kicks off.
“Yeah, just guys that practice, guys that lead up to the game. And they feel like they’re ready,” Moore said. “And then when you get to the game, they could do warm-ups. They go through warm-ups, and it feels like, OK, well, that doesn’t look exactly right. So those are the things that we make the decisions off of.”
All of the above will have a few days to get healthy before full preparation goes into the next game — a rivalry tilt in East Lansing against Michigan State.
