Despite what they said in Columbus when he left for Ann Arbor, Michigan football running backs coach Tony Alford is a heck of a recruiter.
The last cycle, he brought in the nation’s top running back in five-star Savion Hiter. And now he’s starting out the 2027 class with another enigmatic back.
2027 Jackson (Miss.) Brandon four-star tailback Tyson Robinson had been the No. 3 running back in the class but has since fallen a bit down the rankings. Even still, he’s No. 6 of the ball-carriers according to ESPN, and No. 114 overall according to the worldwide leader. He’s No. 224 on the 247Sports Composite and No. 212 according to the Rivals Industry Ranking.
And on Saturday, he committed to Michigan football, the fourth commitment in as many days for the Wolverines.
Here’s the scouting report from 247Sports’ Andrew Ivins:
-Compact runner with an impressive blend of quickness, balance and agility.-Can beat defenders to the perimeter with his speed, but has the feet and feel to work between the tackles as he follows blockers and bounces from lane to lane.-Vision allows him to identify cutback opportunities early.-Core strength leads to broken tackles in the open field.-Slippery in the screen game, but can also challenge defenses on wheel and angle routes.-Will step on the pedal when he finds a crease, but another gear would result in more touchdowns.-Projects as a potential multi-year contributor at the Power Four level that could thrive as a change-of-pace option with his burst and creativity.
The hope is that he will be unlike current running back, Donovan Johnson, who also slid in the rankings after he suffered an ACL tear. But there’s no expectation that he won’t be good to go once he arrives in Ann Arbor.
Here are the current commits in the class, with the Rivals Industry Ranking attached:
Robinson chose Michigan football over other contenders, Alabama and Tennessee. He’s only the third recruit to come to Ann Arbor from the state of Mississippi, following safety Jeremy LeSueur and linebacker Kaden Catchings.
