Just one day removed from signing a five-year max extension with the Memphis Grizzlies, former Michigan State star and the 2023 NBA Defensive Player of the Year, Jaren Jackson Jr., has undergone surgery on a turf toe injury in his right foot that he apparently suffered playing basketball this recently.
According to a release from the Memphis Grizzlies, Jackson Jr. was ‘participating in a live basketball run offsite’ which was determined to require surgery. The release also mentions that, while the man they call JJJ is expected to make a full recovery, there is currently no timeline for his return.
Jackson Jr. is coming off an All-Star season that really saw him blossom into the offensive player many projected him to be, while still being one of the top defenders in the NBA and making the All-Defensive Team as well. I am not expecting the injury to be a major deal and I think Jackson Jr. is on his way to making multiple All-NBA teams in his career.
