MDOT plans $2.2M culvert replacement on U.S. 23 in April

The Michigan Department of Transportation will begin a $2.2 million project to replace the U.S. 23 culvert over Smith’s Creek in April.

According to MDOT, the new box culvert will tie into the existing channel lining, ensuring free flow of Smith’s Creek.

The project will require building a temporary bypass channel for the creek while the new culvert is installed. MDOT officials warn that this will result in significant construction noise.

The project will also require closing U.S. 23 at Smith’s Creek and traffic will be detoured accordingly. The detour will take vehicle traffic to State Street and North Western Avenue, while pedestrians will be detoured via Todd Street, West First Street and Littlefield Street.

The project is estimated to begin April 6 and conclude on June 27.
