Man pleads not guilty by reason of insanity in Clinton County incident

ST. JOHNS — A man who was accused of holding a person hostage during an incident in Bath Township last summer has been determined to be not guilty by reason of insanity.

Bath Township police officers responding to break-in calls fired numerous rounds at a fleeing Bailey Glazier after finding him inside a home. They eventally captured him inside the garage of a nearby home.

Glazier, 28, of East Lansing, was charged with seven felony counts, including assault with intent to murder, in connection with a July 12 incident that played out after officers were called to the 6000 block of Heathfield Drive for a suspicious person walking through yards and trying to break into vehicles.

At one point, Glazier held a knife to a resident’s throat, police said.

Glazier pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to five felony counts and two misdemeanor counts in 29th District Circuit Court on April 20. Prosecutors dismissed felony counts of assault with intent to murder and felonious assault, court records indicate.

Ionia County Prosecutor Kyle Butler and defense attorney Edwar Zeineh stipulated to a forensic examiner’s findings that Glazier lacked the capacity to appreciate the wrongfulness of his conduct.

Judge Cori Barkman remanded Glazier to the state Center for Forensic Psychiatry for an evaluation that could take up to 60 days. The case would then move to probate court, where Glazier could be committed for mental health treatment in a secure facility, said Zeineh and Butler, who was appointed to prosecute the case after Clinton County Prosecutor Tony Spagnuolo recused himself.
