A man accused in a fatal shooting at the Great Lakes Crossing Outlet mall on Saturday has been released from police custody, authorities said Monday.
Auburn Hills police said the 22-year-old Detroit man, who has not been formally charged or identified by name, has been released from the Oakland County Jail, pending further investigation. The man was taken into custody Saturday after gunfire erupted at the mall, and he surrendered without incident and cooperated.
Authorities didn’t provide further information about the investigation but have indicated that the person allegedly shot the Pontiac man after being attacked at the food court common area at the outlet mall, located just off Interstate 75.
Police said the man who died was a 20-year-old Pontiac resident who had a confrontation inside a bathroom at the mall with the Detroiter. The Pontiac man and another unidentified man later jumped the Detroiter, according to the suspect’s account, police said, leading to the gunfire. Police haven’t said whether the Pontiac man had a gun.
A 19-year-old woman who was near the shooting also was wounded in the incident with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
The released man had a license to carry a concealed weapon, according to police.
Anyone who witnessed the shooting, or with any information about the incident, is asked to contact the Auburn Hills Police Department at (248) 370-9444.
