An Upper Michigan man was sentenced Friday to life in prison for what authorities called the “senseless” murder of a woman that also resulted in the loss of her unborn child.
Tavaris Jackson, 35, of Escanaba, will not be able to seek parole as he serves his sentence, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said in a press release.
Jackson killed 22-year-old Harley Corwin of Escanaba on July 3, 2023, authorities said. She was pregnant at the time of her death. Corwin’s remains were found five days later in a field in nearby Ford River Township.
“This was a senseless and brutal crime that took the life of Harley and her unborn child,” Nessel said in the release. “While no sentence will be enough to erase the pain that her loved ones carry, I hope knowing that the person responsible will never again walk free will bring them a measure of peace.”
Jackson’s attorney, Diane Kay-Hougaboom, didn’t immediately return a call seeking comment.
Charges against Jackson were initially filed by the Delta County Prosecutor’s Office. In August 2023, Nessel’s office was appointed to handle the case.
During his trial, experts testified that the victim died from a gunshot wound to the head and her fetus’ death was directly related to Corwin’s, according to a report by the Escanaba-based Daily Press. Other witnesses testified that the victim and suspect had been in an abusive relationship.
This past March, a jury in Delta County’s 47th Circuit Court found Jackson guilty on one count each of first-degree murder, assault of a pregnant individual intentionally causing miscarriage or stillbirth and felony firearm.
