Lakeshore tree removal guru prides himself on responding to crisis

“Holland In Photos,” a series shot by Sentinel photographer Adam Vander Kooy, highlights the extra-ordinary happenings of your neighbors.

HOLLAND — Along the shoreline of Lake Michigan, Ried Meyer moves methodically through his job site, ropes and gear in hand, preparing to remove a defective maple. As the owner of Tree of Sonder, Meyer approaches each job with a mix of precision and purpose, laying out the rules and identifying hazards and obstacles.

Meyer keeps his operation small and hands-on, often working jobs himself while building a reputation through word of mouth across West Michigan. He named the business after his late daughter, Sonder, who died in 2022 after living with a rare syndrome.

Meyer has used his company to assist with disaster relief efforts, clearing trees and debris in communities impacted by storms. By keeping his operation small and flexible, he’s able to respond when needed and use his skills to serve others in times of crisis.
