Michigan is a state rich in resources, from vast water reserves to rich farmland to verdant forests. Michigan has it all.
But what really sets the Great Lakes State apart are its people. Michiganians face many challenges, but they face them together. That’s the strength of the people who live in this magnificent place. We take care of each other.
Every year, The Detroit News, with the help of its readers, selects those Michigan residents who reflect the best qualities of the state to honor as Michiganians of the Year. We have been doing this since 1978, and for the past two years, we have been joined in presenting the awards by the Detroit Regional Chamber.
The list of alumni includes those who have done their work in the spotlight, recognized worldwide for their achievements.
Their names appear next to many others who have labored quietly in humanity’s vineyards, helping to lift and comfort those in need.
The 2026 class of Michiganians is a similar mix of household names and humble servants. They come from across the state and work in a variety of fields. What unites them is their love of Michigan and a determination to make it better for everyone. Together, they’ve done that.
This year, we honor business leaders such as Sandy Pierce and Kenneth Kelly, who lend their talents to solving the state’s biggest problems. We also salute world-class athletes such as Megan Keller and Connor Hellebuyck, whose golden athletic performances thrilled a worldwide audience and united their fellow Michiganians in celebration.
Also in the latest class are Nancy Tellem and Dug Song, who reached the heights of success in the private sector and are now helping others find their paths to the top.
Curtis Lewis is pioneering solutions to closing Michigan’s education achievement gap. Maha Freij is the gatekeeper of a culture that has enriched Michigan, while Christine Delaney is keeping culture alive in a small town. Mike Tirico is an ambassador for our state, sharing its wonders with his extensive audience.
This year, we also give a final salute to an old friend, Paul Bernard, for his tireless work in cultivating a healthy business climate.
These are the 2026 Michiganians of the Year, and we are proud to bring their stories to you.
