Packaged frozen shrimp sold at Kroger recalled due to possible contamination

If you’ve bought frozen shrimp from Kroger, check your freezers. A Seattle, Washington, company has expanded an earlier recall of various packages of frozen shrimp to include shrimp sold at the nationwide grocer because of possible contamination.

Various packages of Kroger frozen raw and cooked shrimp, as well as shrimp skewers, are being recalled because of a possible health risk. AquaStar (USA) Corp, a Seattle, Washington company, announced the expanded recall that was first announced in August and included shrimp sold under other brands and not in stores located in Michigan at that time.

Health officials issued a company alert from Aquastar on the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) website for the shrimp that may have been prepared or packed and held under “insanitary conditions” and may have become “contaminated” with cesium-137 (Cs-137).

According to the alert, Cesium-137 is a “man-made radioisotope of cesium” and “traces of Cs-137 are widespread and can be present in the environment at background levels, and at higher levels in water or foods grown, raised, or produced in areas with environmental contamination.”

It was the U.S. Customs & Border Protection who alerted the FDA after detecting Cs-137 in shipping containers at U.S. ports in Los Angeles, Houston, Savannah and Miami.

The health concern with Cs-137, the AquaStar company alert said, is that long-term and repeated low-dose exposure through consuming contaminated food or water over time “is an elevated risk of cancer, resulting from damage to DNA within living cells of the body.”

The affected shrimp listed in the expanded recall was sold at Kroger stores and its umbrella of stores, including Fred Meyer, Fry’s and Ralphs, in more than 30 states, including Michigan.

According to the recall alert, the FDA’s ongoing investigation determined that the product from PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati violates the Federal Food, Drug, & Cosmetic Act. The FDA also added the company to an “import alert” for chemical contamination and stopped products from entering the U.S.

More than 80,000 bags are being recalled.

The FDA is investigating reports of “Cesium-137 contamination in shipping containers and frozen shrimp products processed by PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati (doing business as BMS Foods) of Indonesia,” according to the recall alert.

In a statement issued Aug. 19, 2025, the FDA said at that time no products tested positive for Cesium-137 and entered the U.S. marketplace.

“The primary health effect of concern following longer term, repeated low dose exposure (e.g., through consumption of contaminated food or water over time) is an elevated risk of cancer, resulting from damage to DNA within living cells of the body,” according to the alert.
