A former resident of Hillsdale County recently pled no contest to a felony stemming from the sexual assault of a minor, according to an announcement from Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel on May 19.
Kevin Murphy, 58, of Kentucky, entered the plea to one count of second-degree criminal sexual conduct for reportedly assaulting a child in 2025. In return, a second count involving a separate minor victim will be dismissed at sentencing.
Murphy was charged in October 2025 by the Hillsdale County Prosecutor’s Office and arraigned in 2B District Court in March. Officials said he was located and extradited through Operation Survivor Justice, a partnership between various state agencies that targets fugitives with outstanding sexual assault warrants.
“It takes tremendous courage for survivors of sexual assault to come forward, especially at such a young age,” Nessel wrote in a statement announcing the plea. “I am incredibly grateful to the victims for their bravery and for the hard work of the prosecutors and U.S. Marshals involved in Operation Survivor Justice.”
Murphy is scheduled for sentencing at 8:30 a.m. June 29 in Hillsdale County’s 1st Circuit Court before Judge Sara Lisznyai. The charge carries a sentence of up to 15 years in prison, according to state law.
