Jefferson, SMCC, Bedford, Huron, Carlson, Summerfield post wins

NEWPORT – Jefferson’s football team is charting a new course this fall.

The Bears are off to a 2-0 start for the first time since 2009 by beating Airport 43-7 on Friday, Sept. 5.

“This is a huge win for us,” Jefferson coach Rob Beaudrie said. “We talked to the kids about streaks. We had lost eight straight to Airport. Some of these kids were not even born the last time we were 2-0.”

Luke Beaudrie ran for two touchdowns, threw a TD to Hunter Barton and took an interception into the end zone.

Drake Jones and Grant Hakeos also scored touchdowns for the Bears.

“I am proud of this team and their effort,” Beaudrie said.

Colton Alston threw a 56-yard touchdown pass down to Austin Tackett for Airport’s score.

SMCC 36, Flat Rock 20

FLAT ROCK – Lukas Linzell was questionable for Week 2.

The SMCC senior was banged up in the Falcons’ season-opening win over Clinton, leaving his status in doubt for an early showdown in the Huron League this week at Flat Rock.

“We weren’t even sure if he was going to be able to play,” SMCC coach Adam Kipf said. “We had to watch him in warmups and see how he was moving, and he was moving real well.”

Well, indeed.

Linzell scored on runs of 42 and 29 yards in the third quarter and then intercepted a pass to kill a fourth-quarter drive to seal a key SMCC victory.

He finished with five carries for 88 yards and nine total tackles on defense.

Flat Rock led 14-7 at halftime before the two TDs by Linzell put the SMCC on top.

“We reminded the kids (at halftime) not to lose their heads. Let’s go out there and play football the way we know how,” Kipf said. “We made just a couple simple adjustments to open things up.”

The Rams pulled within a point early in the fourth quarter on a pass from Joel Scully to Evan Szalay, but Brock Cousino blocked the extra-point attempt.

Drew Ferriera ran for a TD to give SMCC an insurance score.

Cole Reinhardt paced the Falcons with 15 carries for 110 yards and a touchdown, Brady Hines had 13 carries for 102 yards, and Bret Stark added a 25-yard TD catch from Ferriera.

For Flat Rock, quarterback Joel Scully finished 22-for-32 passing for 286 yards and 3 TDs. He completed passes to six different receivers, led by Szalay with 7 receptions for 96 yards. Alexander Beaudrie added 5 catches for 57 yards.

Ben Scully paced the defense with 9 tackles and 2 sacks. David Knezovich recorded 9 tackles and an interception.

“We had to earn this one tonight,” Kipf said. “Flat Rock is a very dynamic football team. They really took it to us in the first half.”

Bedford 23, Ann Arbor Pioneer 13

TEMPERANCE – Bedford, which was shut out in its season opener last week, was staring at a 6-0 deficit after the first quarter.

Then Isaac Henman got the offense rolling. The senior quarterback connected with Luke Whetstone for a 48-yard touchdown pass for a 7-6 lead at halftime.

“That was a game-changer,” Bedford coach John Phillips said. “We saw their defensive backs were playing up, so we just threw the ball over their heads.”

Henman ran for a TD in the fourth quarter and finished 12-of-18 for 176 yards through the air.

The Mules also scored a safety and got a rushing touchdown from Masyn Moran (14 yards).

“We still made a lot of mistakes, but it was good to get the win,” Phillips said.

Gibraltar Carlson 68, Dearborn Edsel Ford 0

DEARBORN – Gibraltar Carlson was dominant in rolling to 2-0.

“Everyone got in the game and seven different players scored touchdowns,” Carlson coach Jason Gendron said. “Defensively, the entire unit contributed to the shutout. Proud of how we executed in all three phases of the game.”

Avery Ortiz got the Marauders started by returning a punt 30 yards for a score in the first quarter.

Trent Ison ran 14 yards for a TD and threw two scoring passes to Izaiah Wright (40 and 5 yards) and one to Carmine Carafelli (41).

Wright also ran 29 yards for a score.

Other rushing TDs came from Carafelli (42, Brennan Hudson (56) and Leo Rowe (5). Drew Biro caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from Cole Federoff.

Summerfield 40, Detroit Northwestern 6

PETERSBURG – Austin Taylor scored on runs of 6, 16 and 1 yards as Summerfield moved to 2-0.

“We’re winning, but I feel like we’re still growing as a team,” Summerfield coach Dylan Szegedi said. “You never discount a win, but we could play better.”

Other TDs for the Bulldogs came on a 52-yard pass from Reece Kalb to Russell LaRocca, a 10-yard pass from Clark Ciarcelli to Caleb Sheppard and a 1-yard plunge by Trent Miller.

Summerfield also had a sack in the end zone for a safety.

Huron 18, Grosse Ile 7

NEW BOSTON – An 82-yard touchdown run from New Boston Huron junior Jamil Brown and a successful conversion from Landon Hall proved the difference out on the island for New Boston Huron.

That late first-quarter drive put the Chiefs ahead 8-0 and they held on through the second half to improve to 1-1.

Hall added a 5-yard TD run midway through the second quarter for a 15-0 halftime lead. Chiefs’ kicker Johann Vasquez iced the game with a 25-yard field goal in the closing minutes of the fourth.

Grosse Ile’s Rocco Cappelino caught a 58-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tanner Symons to pull the Red Devils within 15-7 in the third quarter.

Dexter 48, Monroe 7

MONROE – A Dexter team expected to contend for the Southeastern Conference Red championship scored 28 points in the first half and led 41-0 at halftime.

“They are a very good team,” Monroe coach Kyle Reed said.

Kenny Richards led the Trojans in rushing with 7 carries for 41 yards and scored on a 10-yard run in the third quarter.

“I asked the guys at halftime not to quit and keep working hard,” Reed said. “That’s exactly what they did.”

Riverview 45, Milan 14

RIVERVIEW – Riverview piled up all of its points in the first half.

“Riverview is big and really good once again this year,” Milan coach Jesse Hoskins said. “We put together a solid opening drive, but couldn’t score in the red zone. Inconsistent overall play made for a tough first half. Our kids played hard in the second half and finished the game how we asked.”

Milan scored in the fourth quarter on long runs by Charlie Brown (78 yards) and JJ Woods (62).

Brown finished with 94 yards on just three carries.

Hudson 8, Ida 3

IDA – For more than 46 minutes, Ida’s defense had a shutout going.

That came to an end with 1:50 remaining as Hudson finally broke through with a 3-yard touchdown run to take the lead and sneak away with an 8-3 victory.

“We have to be able to finish games,” Ida coach Jeff Potter said. “The D-line played well, but we need to find a way to finish against good teams.”

Ida went up 3-0 in the second quarter on a Jaxon Bolster field goal from 25 yards out.

“Both teams were really stout defensively,” said Potter, who praised the performance of AJ Sivil, Alex Abram, Justin Crozier and Ryan Ashcraft along the defensive line.

Dylan Jarrett also shined with 10 tackles, and Jacob Towne added six.

Braden Bydlowski (12 carries for 58 yards), Owen Snyder (eight carries for 46 yards) and Gavin Albring (13 carries for 33 yards and a 32-yard reception) paced the offense.

Ida mustered a 31-yard drive in the final minutes that fell short just outside Hudson’s 20. Ida also was blocked on a 42-yard field goal attempt.

Onsted 21, Dundee 0

ONSTED – Dundee is still looking for its first touchdown of the season. The Vikings dropped their second straight 21-0 decision following last week’s identical loss to Adrian.

The scoreless streak was nearly broken early as Dundee marched down to the Wildcats’ 1-yard line on its opening drive. A fumble turned the game the other direction.

Two other Dundee drives stalled in the red zone.

“We need to finish drives and we can’t panic under pressure,” Dundee coach Jason Carpenter said. “We have to keep putting them under pressure situations in practice. We have to be competitive in practice in order to be competitive in the games.”

The Vikings (0-2) get their first home game next week when they host Adrian Madison.

Tawas 44, Erie Mason 14

LINDEN – Erie Mason (0-2) scored first on a 1-yard run by Kory Bondie and a 2-point conversion pass from Bowie Jacobs to Ashton Beachner, but Tawas responded with 22 points in the second quarter.

Mason’s other touchdown came on a 15-yard pass from Jacobs to Brody Koehl.

“There were glimpses of what we’re capable of on both sides of the ball, but our lack of consistency hurt us in the end,” Mason coach Steve Bowers said. “Defensively, we allowed Tawas to extend drives by converting on fourth downs, and offensively we struggled to take care of the football, throwing multiple interceptions. We also missed a couple of scoring chances that could have made a difference.”

Bowers praised the play of Lucas Hutson, Lucas Neely and Leroy Cuykendall.
