Arrest and charges

According to police, troopers responded around 3:50 p.m. with Wayne County Child Protective Services. Investigators determined multiple children had been left unattended for an extended period without adequate supervision or sufficient food.

Sharkey was charged with three counts of endangering the welfare of a child and taken into custody without incident. Child Protective Services remained at the scene to arrange care for the children.

Medical emergency at jail

Police said Sharkey was transported to State Police Williamson for processing and then to the Wayne County Jail for arraignment.

At about 8 p.m., while arriving at the jail, she became unresponsive inside a patrol vehicle.

Troopers began emergency medical care, including administering Narcan and using an automated external defibrillator, while requesting emergency medical services. She was taken to Newark-Wayne Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Investigation ongoing

The State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation is handling the case. The New York State Attorney General’s Office was notified and responded.

An autopsy will be conducted by the Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause and manner of death. The investigation remains ongoing.
