Huron boys soccer cruises past Airport in district championship game

ADRIAN – New Boston Huron’s boy’s soccer team is ranked No. 2 in the state for Division 2.

The Chiefs showed why in the finals of the district hosted by Adrian, rolling over Huron League foe Airport 8-0 on Thursday, Oct. 16.

“Normally in the district finals you would not assume so, but our guys were just ready to play,” Huron coach Matt Lividini said when asked if the lopsided score surprised him. “They were going full speed. They were playing like the No. 2 team in the state.”

Ian Petrick and Johann Vasquez-Martinez led the attack with two goals and an assist each. Matthew Hussy also scored twice with Mason Jasinski and Jordan Stasak recording the other goals.

“Everything was working for us,” Lividini said. “We had a lot of missed shots, but we put eight over the line, that’s what counts.”

Huron only needed one over the line because of the stellar defense played by Stasak, Jansinski, Ryan Marvaso and Shayne Diegel in front of Ian Akenbauer.

Huron takes an 18-1-2 record into the semifinals of the regional at Dearborn Divine Child Tuesday.

Ida fell 3-0 to Grosse Ile in the finals of the Division 3 District at Flat Rock.

THURSDAY’S TOP PERFORMERS

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Avery Turk, Falyn Doss, Zoey Cheney, Ellia Egle, Alexis White, Jennalynn Bronstein and Kayla Christesen, New Boston Huron: All finished in the Top 17 as Huron rolled to the team title in the Huron League Meet at Willow Metropark. Huron scored 36 points to finish 45 ahead of runner-up Airport as its runners checked in at 4-5-6-9-14-15-17. Milan was fourth with 98, St. Mary Catholic Central fifth with 106 and Jefferson sixth with 111. SMCC’s Bella LaFountain was the individual champion in 19:30.09 followed by Claire Miller of Jefferson and Milan’s Amerie Wilson. Other top 20 finishes came from Kaily McDaniel of Milan, Randee Mulherin of Jeferson, Abbey Ward, Kendal Kleman, Leah Adkins and Madison Agocs of Airport and SMCC’s Juleigh Husby of SMCC.

Giada Fioritto, Gibraltar Carlson: Broke her own school record with a time of 19:41.5 to take fifth place in the Downriver League Meet at Lake Erie Metropark. She was joined on the All-League team by Madison Slade, Harper Jackson, Ada Cain and Livia Boucher as Carlson took second in the team standings.

Audrey Grosteffon, Bedford: Took ninth place in the Southeastern Conference Red Championships. Teammate Sophia Johnson place 27th and Corinna Aulph and Zoey Smalling of Monroe ran 33-34. Bedford took sixth in the team standings, one spot ahead of Monroe.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Jacob Stanislawski, Flat Rock: Ran 16:01.77 to hold off St. Mary Catholic Central’s Christian Craanen (16:05.03) for the championship in the Huron League Meet at Willow Metropark. Luke Dulecki of New Boston Huron placed third. Airport captured the team title with 62 points as Easton Danie, Will Dobertin, Hunter Rodak, Adnrew Bell and Hayden Bovair finished 9-11-12-13-17. Flat Rock (81) and New Boston Huron (83) waged a great battle for second place. Jefferson was fourth with 94, St. Mary Catholic Central fifth with 112 and Milan seventh with 179. Also in the top 20 were Lucas Taraszkiewicz of Flat Rock, Cameron Crane of Huron, Mason Tulik of Jefferosn, Mason Martin of Milan, Max Foldvary of SMCC, Brayden Brodie of Flat Rock, Tanner Kuhn of Huron, Calvin Haydamacker of Flat Rock, Carter Lee of Jefferson and Luke Masserant of Jefferson.

Wyatt DelValle and Jack Dunwoody, Gibraltar Carlson: Took 15th and 16th, respectively, in the Downriver League Meet to earn spots on the All-League Team. Matthew Effah broke the 20-minute mark for the first time as Carlson took fourth in the team standings.

Dane Hieronimus, Bedford: Placed eighth in the Southeastern Conference Red Championships. His teammate Cameron Varner ran 17th and Gavin Rohr of Monroe placed 24th. Bedford was fifth in the team standings and Monroe seventh.

VOLLEYBALL

Alyssa Torres, Ida: Recorded 16 assists in a 25-9, 25-20, 25-23 sweep of Monroe in the annual Teal Attack game for the two schools. Ella Taylor led the offense with 7 kills while Addy Wilt, Ella Curry, and Julia Williams added 5 each. “It was a great night raising money for ovarian cancer awareness,” Ida coach Ashley Begeman said.

Maddie Salenbien, Dundee: Racked up 12 kills and 6 blocks in a 25-15, 21-25, 25-17, 25-14 win over Ypsilanti Lincoln. Other standouts were Lacey Evans (20 digs), Sophia Nolff (15 digs), Lilly Motylinski (5 aces), Mckenzie Heat h(4 aces) and Ella Fowler (20 assists). 

Addie Homrich, Erie Mason: Accumulated 28 kills in a 25-22, 25-18, 21-25, 20-25, 15-13 victory over Morenci. Jayanna Willets led with 24 digs and Paige Konrad was tops in blocks with 5 for the 12-9 Eagles. “The team’s hard work, focus, and teamwork really paid off,” Mason coach Kayle Scott. “They stayed composed under pressure and supported each other all the way through, exactly what strong teams do.”

Bridget Salenbien, Summerfield: Delivered 8 digs, 5 kills and 3 aces in a 25-17, 25-23-25-23 loss to Lenawee Christian. Riley Soldwish finished with 15 assists and Maya Stone recorded 12 digs for the 12-8 Bulldogs.
