A 62-year-old man died Friday while diving at a shipwreck site in northern Lake Huron.
The man, whose name wasn’t released, was an experienced recreational diver from Sylvania, Ohio, who was accompanied by other divers, said police.
The man experienced an emergency that apparently didn’t involve malfunctioning diving equipment or improper charter service operations, said the Cheboygan County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident occurred around 10:15 a.m. at the site of the shipwreck of the SS Cedarville, a bulk carrier that sank in 1965.
The other divers initiated life-saving techniques and helped emergency responders but their efforts were in vain.
The incident remains under investigation.
Cheboygan Sheriff Todd Ross said he and the sheriff’s office extended their condolences to the family of the victim.
