A local teenager has been sentenced for the death of 16-year-old Gypsy Simonyi following a car crash on Oak Grove Road in 2025.
Isaac McLean, 18, was sentenced to 3-15 years in prison by Judge Matthew McGivney in Livingston County’s 44th Circuit Court on April 30, according to WHMI.
McLean was charged with second-degree murder, but pled guilty to a lesser charge of reckless driving causing death. In addition to his sentence, he must pay $4,000 in restitution.
Simonyi was killed in September 2025 after being ejected from her car on Oak Grove Road in Howell Township. According to a release from the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, Simonyi was driving a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze when her vehicle was struck by a 2014 Dodge Charger — driven by McLean — as she was turning onto Oak Grove Road from Grove Meadows Boulevard.
Several family members made victim impact statements, and are pushing for the state to pass “Gypsy’s Law,” which would strengthen safeguards and penalties for extreme reckless driving.
A petition to show support for the law has over 3,700 signatures.
