The Hillsdale County Board is weighing three options to relocate the 2B District Court, each estimated at about $3 million, as the deadline approaches to vacate the Courthouse Annex.
The board recently hired an architect to provide a refreshed look at possible solutions, including moving operations into the Hillsdale County Courthouse or relocating entirely to 25 Care Drive — a county-owned building that’s currently being leased to mental health agency LifeWays.
Commissioner Doug Ingles called the courthouse building “very challenging” to work with, prompting consideration of a possible addition — either on a portion of the site’s parking lot or a nearby grassy area. In either case, the expansion would be roughly 6,000 square feet.
Officials are currently reviewing all three proposals, including the two expansions and the relocation to 25 Care Drive, which carry similar costs. They are expected to revisit the discussion in the coming weeks and months.
The relocation effort stems from the sale of the Courthouse Annex Building to Hillsdale Renaissance, LLC, in 2023. The county has continued leasing the space, but must vacate by October 2028.
