An altercation between two family members escalated, leaving one man dead and another charged with assault, according to a release from Dearborn Police Department.
At about 7:46 a.m. Aug. 19, Dearborn Police responded to a report of an assault at a home in the 6500 block of Theisen Street.
A 64-year-old man injured in the assault was treated by firefighters at the scene and taken to a hospital for further evaluation and treatment, police said. The victim’s name was not released by police.
Following an investigation, the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office charged Mohammed Rustom, 43, of Dearborn with assault with intent to murder and assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder.
On Aug. 20, Rustom was arraigned before Judge Mark Somers in Dearborn’s 19th District Court. Bond was set at $500,000 cash or surety.
On Aug. 22, the 64-year-old victim died from his injuries, police said. In light of the death, Dearborn Police will submit the case to the Prosecutor’s Office for consideration of additional or amended charges.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin said in a statement. “Our investigators will continue working closely with the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office to ensure the individual responsible is held accountable through the justice system.”
Rustom is being held in Wayne County Jail pending additional charges. He is set to appear for a probable cause conference on Sept. 2.
