HILLSDALE — Hillsdale College held its annual Commencement Ceremony on Sunday, May 11, with an address by Victor Davis Hanson, according to a community announcement.
Hanson, a distinguished fellow in history at Hillsdale, emphasized the college’s role in the national conversation about federal funding in higher education. He praised Hillsdale for its longstanding disavowal of government money, highlighting its independence from federal subsidies.
He also encouraged the graduating class to uphold the values they learned at Hillsdale, emphasizing the importance of ethical conduct and personal standards.
“You, the graduating class, have been instructed in, absorbed fully, and will pass on this code of honorable conduct that has become a natural, not of force, part of who you are,” Hanson said.
Hanson is a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution and a professor emeritus at California State University, Fresno. He has written for several publications, including The Wall Street Journal and The Daily Telegraph, and is the author of numerous books.
Hillsdale College President Larry Arnn also spoke at the ceremony, highlighting the unique nature of the event and the collective effort of the college community.
Arnn recognized Christopher Matsos, chairman and associate professor of theater, as the 2025 Professor of the Year. He also acknowledged the outstanding seniors and top academic graduates from the Class of 2025, as well as Professor of Chemistry Mark Nussbaum, who is retiring after 24 years of service.
