It appears the new Gordie Howe International Bridge is not only opening in the near future to vehicular traffic but to pedestrians and bicyclists as well.
As the Free Press and other media have already reported, the new span over the Detroit River between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, will open to roadway traffic on July 27th. Now, the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority (WDBA), which oversees bridge operations, says it expects the pedestrian/bike path to open on Wednesday, Aug. 5.
The WDBA made the scheduling announcement on Facebook on July 15.
The 1 1/2-mile path over the new bridge is a single lane just under 12 feet wide and will accommodate pedestrians and cyclists together. It is also expected to have entrances and exits separate from the roadway traffic and be toll-free. The path also will link with the Trans Canada Trail in Windsor and to the Iron Belle Trail and the Great Lakes Way on the Michigan side.
A WDBA spokesperson said pedestrians and cyclists don’t need a passport to get on the bridge, but you’ll need one to exit on either side, regardless of which one you started your journey from.
