Here's how warm Metro Detroit could get in the next few days

A warmup is on the way for southeast Michigan, according to the National Weather Service.

Officials with the agency said high temperatures across the region are expected to reach into the lower to mid-60s on Thursday. NWS also predicted clouds would decrease.

Detroit’s high temperature on Thursday should hit 65 degrees under partly sunny skies, according to the NWS forecast. The city’s average monthly high temperature for May is 70.3.

Meteorologists at the weather service said the region’s high temperatures will climb into the upper 70s and possibly the lower 80s over the weekend.

Their forecast calls for highs on Friday to range between the upper 60s and the lower 70s as warm air builds across the Great Lakes on Friday and Saturday. Detroit’s high temperature could climb to 70 on Friday, the agency said.

Saturday’s highs should range between the upper 70s and lower 80s around southeast Michigan. In Detroit, the high is expected to rise to 83, according to the forecast.

NWS officials are calling for a repeat on Sunday. The high in Detroit could reach 81.

However, the weather service cautions there are multiple opportunities for showers and thunderstorms this weekend through early next week.

Even warmer weather ahead

Still, the NWS predicts even warmer weather early next week. Detroit could see the mercury rise to 90 degrees on Monday and Tuesday.

On Thursday, AccuWeather meteorologists said a summerlike surge of heat and humidity is set to build across the Northeast, mid-Atlantic, and Midwest starting this weekend and continuing into early next week, just ahead of Memorial Day.

“It will feel like a flip of a switch across the Northeast starting this weekend, with temperatures jumping from springlike levels to midsummer territory,” Adam Douty, an AccuWeather senior meteorologist, said in a statement. “After a chilly stretch, this will be a noticeable change, especially with temperatures running 5 to 10 degrees below the historical average across parts of the interior Northeast and Midwest so far this month.”

He also said humidity will surge along with the warmth, with dew points climbing into the 60s.

“It will feel noticeably more humid compared to earlier warmups in the Northeast this spring,” Douty said. “Millions of air conditioners will be turning back on, with temperatures expected to push above 90 degrees in parts of the mid-Atlantic early next week.

“AccuWeather RealFeel Temperatures could approach 100 degrees for a few hours in some locations due to the combination of heat, sunshine, and humidity.”
