With local schools back from spring break, we’re back with another collection of exceptional local students.
Each week, high school principals and staffers around Holland share their nominees for Student of the Week with The Sentinel. We share those honorees online Fridays and in print Sundays.
This week’s students were recognized for their character, sense of humor, leading by example, building community and more.
Mackenzie Cortez, Zeeland East High School
This week we honor one of the best leaders in the ZEHS Class of 2026! Mackenzie Cortez is an outstanding student and athlete who consistently leads with grace and demonstrates resilience in her commitment to those around her.
She leads by example with her work ethic and positive attitude, representing what it means to be a well-rounded student-athlete! We are so grateful for her character, uplifting spirit, and the pure joy she brings to the classroom and to her soccer teammates!
Sam (Edgar) Saldivar, Holland Christian High School
Gracious, respectful of all and a great encourager, Sam has been an international student at HCHS since ninth grade. He has been an outstanding student athlete with a 3.9 GPA and has played lacrosse for three years, and football for four. His great sense of humor, curiosity and responsibility help build class community.
Furthermore, Sam is very willing to work with his hands and has a great attitude while doing it. He is proud of his work and it shows. He has been a valuable part of HCHS and has been an important part of the international program there. He plans to attend Calvin University in the fall!
