Hartland Township will spend up to $47,000 to study traffic at the intersection of M-59 and Old US-23 — an essential step toward seeking grant funding for long-discussed improvements.
The resolution, approved unanimously by trustees July 7, will gather the data necessary to pursue a TIP (Transportation Improvement Program) Grant, which could cover project costs up to 80%.
The study will be conducted during the school year, when traffic is heaviest, by engineering firm Spalding DeDecker.
Officials have long identified the intersection as problematic, citing heavy traffic on M-59 that’s expected to increase with ongoing development — including a gas station from Sheetz.
There are currently no plans from the Michigan Department of Transportation to improve the intersection without outside funding, according to Hartland Township. MDOT is, however, open to reviewing a proposal upon completion of the study, according to Township Supervisor Bill Fountain.
