Harbor Springs golf earns top top finish in D4, Mertz of St. Mary impresses

EAST LANSING — The Charlevoix boys golf team wasn’t the only group out of northern Michigan putting the rest of the state on notice over the weekend.

There were plenty others from the north turning in strong finishes at the Division 2, 3 and 4 state championships.

While the Rayders took the cake with a Division 4 state championship behind a 332-313-645 finish, Harbor Springs actually placed sixth in Division 4 with a 345-342–687.

The Division 4 state finals took place at Forest Akers West in East Lansing.

It’s one of the best finishes in years for the Rams, who, along with Charlevoix, were one of just two public schools to finish inside the top eight of the D4 final standings.

Harbor Springs freshman William Shepler came through with a 16th place finish to lead the Rams, who will return five of their six golfers used during the finals.

Shepler fired an 84-80–164, then was followed by junior Noah Marquardt with an 86-81–167, junior Colin Blanck’s 84-91–175; senior Chase Lafaive, 91-90–181; and sophomore Vincent Alonzi and junior John Westbrook, 91-96–187.
