A 740-foot Great Lakes freighter that ran aground on the St. Clair River near Sarnia, Ontario has been successfully refloated and is continuing its voyage after assistance from tugboats, according to the Canadian Coast Guard.
The Algoma Equinox, carrying grain and bound for Baie-Comeau, Quebec, ran aground about 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 21.
Jeremy Hennessy, communications advisor for the Canadian Coast Guard, said there have been no injuries, pollution or damage to the vessel’s hull.
“The vessel is stable and there are no signs of water ingress or damage to its hull,” Hennessy said. “The grounding is not affecting navigation; vessels are able to transit the area normally.”
Hennessy said the vessel was successfully refloated about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday under its own power with assistance from tugboats and is proceeding on its original intended course.
