Free flights for kids returns to Pellston airport Aug. 19

Free airplane rides for children ages 8 to 17 will be offered at the Pellston Regional Airport from 5-7:30 p.m. Aug. 19 through a local aviation outreach program.

The flights are being organized by the Harbor Springs chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association, according to a community announcement. Licensed local pilots who belong to the chapter are donating both their time and aircraft for the event.

Parents are encouraged to register their children in advance and complete required paperwork through eaachapters.org.

Each participant must be accompanied by a parent during the free flight experience. After their flight, children will receive an EAA pilot logbook and a certificate signed by their pilot.

The event will not be rescheduled if weather conditions make flying unsafe.

The flights are part of the national Young Eagles program, which began in 1992 and is designed to expose young people to aviation and encourage interest in careers and opportunities connected to flight, according to the announcement.

The Harbor Springs chapter has participated in the program continuously since its launch and has been recognized by the EAA for that long-term involvement.

More than 2.5 million young people across the country have received a free introductory Young Eagles flight since the program began. The flights are made possible through volunteer efforts by EAA members nationwide.
