Forecasters: Frost possible in Lansing area overnight May 8 and May 9

LANSING — If you tried to cheat by giving your flowers or vegetables an early start this year, it might be a good idea to cover them overnight on May 8 and May 9, forecasters said.

A frost advisory will be in effect for much of south-central and southwest Michigan from midnight May 8 to 9 a.m. May 9, the National Weather Service said. Freeze warnings have been issued for northern lower Michigan.

The average last freeze date in the Lansing region is right around this time of year, said Ernie Ostuno, a forecaster for the weather service in Grand Rapids. It would be prudent to cover any vulnerable plants with something like an old bed spread, as clear plastic will radiate heat and could kill plants, he said.

Potted plants can be brought indoors, but “stuff in the ground, you’ve got to cover it,” he said.

Frost formation could be spotty in advisory areas such as Lansing, where overnight temperatures could fall into the 20s in localized areas but stay above freezing in others. Ostuno said. Frost will be more widespread in areas such as Mt. Pleasant and Clare, where freeze warnings are in place, he said.
