Ex-Lions QB Teddy Bridgewater responds to high school coaching suspension in Florida

Former Detroit Lions quarterback Teddy Bridgewater is planning to stay in Miami to support his alma mater despite his apparent suspension from any official coaching at the school.

“Got a phone call tonight and it’s no real investigation going on,” Bridgewater said in a post following the apparent suspension. “I told you I have to be an employee to be investigated.”

Bridgewater became the head coach of Miami Northwestern High School after announcing his retirement from the NFL following the 2023 NFL season. He led the Bulls to the Class 3A state championship in his first year at the helm.

However, he returned to the Lions late in the 2024 season to back up Jared Goff for the team’s playoff push. He appeared in the Lions’ playoff loss to the Commanders for three plays after Goff took a hard hit.

“The suspension came from MNW and it’s impossible to suspend someone who doesn’t work for you,” Bridgewater said.

The suspension stems from impermissible benefits given to players which Bridgewater himself posted on Facebook about and says he self-reported to the school.

“Each week I spend around $700 on uber fares,” he said as only part of the long list of expenses he says it cost him to support the team’s activities. The post asked supporters of the program to help donate.

Bridgewater said despite the suspension situation, he won’t be seeking a coaching job elsewhere and will support the team as a volunteer if necessary.
