Former Lions offensive lineman T.J. Lang took to 97.1 The Ticket to express his criticism over Detroit’s play schemes this season. Watching the Lions offense lining up against the Vikings this past weekend had Lang feeling as if the gameplay was the “most frustrating” he’s watched. He goes on to mention that the offense appeared to be reacting to the Vikings defense, as opposed to coming up with strategic plans as they often did with Ben Johnson as the Offensive Coordinator.
This time, rather, John Morton seems to be focused on setting Jahmyr Gibbs up as the star on the offense, leaving little question for an opposing defense as to what their move may be. As Lang stated, “they are literally showing you what they’re doing every single time,” forcing Gibbs to pick up the blitz in the gap over and over again.
Because of this, Detroit refrains from gaining significant yardage throughout the game, and the few times Morton adjusts their plan, they seem to falter. For example, Detroit makes a decision to run David Montgomery, who has a stronger ability to force his way through opponents than Gibbs; Montgomery unfortunately fumbles, drawing them right back.
Lang questions whether Detroit is lacking creativity in the game play, neglecting to bring back stronger moves that moved the chains. Will forcing Gibbs up the middle on repeat hold the Lions’ offense back and potentially affect the outcome of bigger games against stronger defenses?
