Emma Anderson succeeding in quest to make lasting impact for Grand Ledge girls soccer

To Emma Anderson, there’s no feeling in the world like scoring a goal.

For as long as she’s played soccer, there’s nothing that has replicated that feeling for the Grand Ledge senior captain.

And Anderson got to experience that feeling in an important recent game for the Comets, scoring the lone goal in their final CAAC Blue contest against DeWitt on May 6. That goal helped Grand Ledge play to a draw with the Panthers and secure the outright league title.

“I kind of feel like I was just in the right place at the right time because I still feel like the fact that I’m the person that scored that goal is a little bit like a dream to me or a little bit hazy,” said Anderson, who was voted the latest One North Kitchen and Bar LSJ high school athlete of the week. “It hasn’t even really sunk in to me yet just because DeWitt has always been such a challenging powerhouse of a team.

“The fact that I was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time and score that goal is just unreal to me.”

Helping the Comets experience success like they have the last two seasons has been a big priority for Anderson, who has wanted to leave a lasting impact in the program.

The accomplishments of the last two years have been big for Grand Ledge, which has gone unbeaten in CAAC Blue play in that span. The Comets own an 11-3-2 mark following their May 15 loss to DeWitt in the CAAC Gold Cup championship game.

“It’s such a crazy feeling to be completely honest because Grand Ledge hasn’t really ever been a soccer school,” Anderson said. “We’ve won our league like four times in history. We kind of did it last year and honestly we were all disappointed. Sharing the league is great but it’s a lot cooler to now have the league to ourselves. It kind of felt like it was about time that we won the league.”

Anderson hopes to help Grand Ledge build on its success with the state tournament set to start May 22 against Eastern.

“I think I speak on behalf of everyone of my teammates when I say that winning the league title just isn’t enough for a team that’s as good as we are,” Anderson said. “Winning the league was awesome for a first step.”
