Eaton County experienced some of the strongest wind gusts from thunderstorms on Monday, May 18, the National Weather Service said.
According to 24-hour storm reports from the National Weather Service weather stations and observers, Woodbury, in western Eaton County, experienced 90 mph wind gusts, the highest reported statewide from Monday’s severe weather.
Edgemont Park near the Capital Region International Airport reported 68 mph gusts; Lansing had 48 mph gusts; Holt had a report of 43 mph gusts; and Charlotte saw 44 mph gusts.
Strong winds were mainly recorded across the southern half of the Lower Peninsula where widespread power outages occurred.
Michigan is expected to see additional thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon and evening, May 19, with the highest risk of severe weather in the southeast L.P. Officials issued a severe thunderstorm watch.
In Lansing, thunderstorms are predicted to develop after 2 p.m. and possibly until 10 p.m., according to the NWS hourly forecast.
“Storms could spark along a frontal boundary through the southeastern portion of the state mid to late afternoon and into the early evening hours (May 19),” Grand Rapids NWS said on social media on May 19. “Biggest area of concern is Jackson eastward. Main threat will be damaging winds but quarter size hail is possible.”
