A Detroit teen is behind bars, accused of fatally shooting a Redford Township man last month at a home on the Detroit’s west side.
Mario Carl Melvin Neal, 19, is accused of killing 23-year-old Kemajai Darden on June 7 at a home in the 8700 block of Quincy Street, located between Grand River Avenue and Joy Road, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.
Neal allegedly shot Darden several times with a rifle before fleeing, prosecutors said. Police arrived at the scene around 3:25 a.m. after receiving a report of a shooting and found Darden unresponsive in the dining room. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have not disclosed a suspected motive in the killing.
Police arrested Neal on Friday. He was arraigned Monday in Detroit’s 36th District Court on charges of first-degree murder and felony firearm. During the proceedings, Neal stood mute and a plea of not guilty was entered by the court on his behalf, online court records show.
Judge Shawn K. Jacque denied Neal bond and scheduled a probable cause conference for 8:30 a.m. July 29.
Court records do not list an attorney for the suspect.
In Michigan, first-degree murder carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
