Detroit police shoot, kill person in raid on westside home

Police fatally shot a person Thursday evening on the city’s west side, authorities said.

The shooting comes three days after a Detroit officer fatally shot a 19-year-old suspect police said was armed with a weapon after he fled from authorities downtown ahead of the annual fireworks display.

At about 6:30 p.m. Thursday, officers arrived in the 18900 block of Rosemont Avenue to serve a search warrant in relation to an investigation of a felonious assault reported earlier this month, authorities said.

Inside the home, they encountered a subject who opened fire, Deputy Chief Arnold Williams said.

“They returned fire, fatally wounded the subject,” Williams said.

Police said they would release additional details at a later time. The incident remains under investigation.

Williams said Michigan State Police will conduct an independent investigation into the shooting. He declined to provide any identifying details about the officer who fired the fatal shot, or the individual who was killed.
