Detroit police revise shooting account, say victim shot himself

The Detroit police chief said a review of body-worn cameras by officers at a shooting during a search of a home Wednesday found the suspect fatally shot himself, revising an earlier account that an officer had shot and killed him.

Police Chief Todd Bettison said he had not had a chance to review the body cameras of the incident on Detroit’s east side before the first statement, but after a review, he had a different picture of the fatal shooting.

“… I watched it at least 15 times, and it’s clear ot me that the subject shot himself in the head with a handgun,” Bettison said later Wednesday.

The shooting remained under investigation and information will be turned over to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office. The medical examiner will determine the cause of death, he said.

Police had executed a search warrant on Detroit’s east side, during which a 20 year old was shot, Fox 2 Detroit reported. Police now say the man shot himself before police began firing. The shooting occurred at about 2 p.m., near the intersection of Moross and Kelly roads, WDIV (Channel 4) reported.
