The Detroit Jazz Festival has unveiled its full lineup and a series of updates for 2026, bringing a mix of global stars, rising artists and local talent to downtown Detroit over Labor Day weekend.
The free festival, now in its 47th year, runs Sept. 4–7 and will feature four days of performances across multiple stages. Organizers say several changes are aimed at improving the overall attendee experience while maintaining the event’s scale and accessibility.
Among the most significant updates is a fully centralized festival footprint at Hart Plaza, where all three primary stages — the Carhartt Amphitheater Stage, Pyramid Stage and Absopure Waterfront Stage — will be located.
“At its core, jazz is about connection, and bringing the festival fully into Hart Plaza helps us deepen that connection,” said Chris Collins, Detroit Jazz Festival Foundation president and artistic director. “Audiences can more easily move between performances, discover new artists and experience the festival as one unified celebration of music.
“Just as important, this year’s lineup reflects the incredible breadth and vitality of jazz today—from legends like Ron Carter and Bob James to visionary artists like Ravi Coltrane, Artemis and Kurt Elling with Yellowjackets. We are proud to present a world-class festival that remains free and accessible to everyone, made possible through the unwavering support of our patrons, sponsors and community partners.”
Additional programming will take place at the Detroit Jazz Hall inside the Gretchen C. Valade Jazz Center at Wayne State University, which continues to serve as a hub for festival events, including late-night “Midtown After Hours” performances and student showcases.
The streamlined layout is designed to improve crowd flow, safety and movement between stages. Updated Hart Plaza hours will be 5:30–11 p.m. Friday; 12:30–11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday; and 12:30–8 p.m. Monday.
Another important change is a new policy that will prohibit guests from bringing coolers inside the plaza.
Despite the changes, Collins emphasized that several core elements remain the same, including free admission, the number of stages and performances, and the event’s family-friendly atmosphere.
