These honors underscore the region’s growing reputation as a destination for immersive, family-friendly learning grounded in history, innovation and storytelling.

How the 10BEST Awards Work

Each year, USA TODAY’s 10BEST program highlights excellence across travel, food and lifestyle categories. A panel of industry experts nominates the leading attractions and 10BEST editors vet the submissions before opening voting to the public for a four‑week period.

Michigan Science Center: A STEM powerhouse in Midtown

Located in the Cultural Center Historic District, the Michigan Science Center offers more than 220 hands‑on exhibits, live stage shows, an IMAX Dome Theater, a planetarium and a suite of interactive STEM experiences designed to spark curiosity for all ages.

As a Smithsonian affiliate, the museum reaches nearly 250,000 learners annually, extending its mission across Michigan through outreach programs and distance learning initiatives.

Dossin Great Lakes Museum: Maritime history on Belle Isle

Perched on the Detroit River, the Dossin Great Lakes Museum explores the Great Lakes’ influence on transportation, industry and recreation. Visitors encounter maritime engines, elegant riverboats and stories of shipping culture unique to the region.

The museum also features one of the world’s largest ship-model collections and notable artifacts such as the bow anchor of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald, offering a compelling window into maritime heritage.

The Henry Ford: A national showcase of ingenuity

In Dearborn, the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation highlights the inventions and technologies that shaped modern American life. Exhibits span historic automobiles, aircraft, presidential vehicles and displays covering agriculture, mathematics and car racing — all illustrating the country’s arc of creativity and problem‑solving.

The institution, part of the larger Henry Ford complex, is recognized as one of the nation’s premier destinations for understanding American innovation at scale.

Greenfield Village: A living tapestry of American life

Also part of The Henry Ford, Greenfield Village is an 80‑acre open‑air museum that transports visitors across 300 years of American history. Home to seven historic districts and dozens of preserved or reconstructed buildings, the village immerses guests in bygone eras through working farms, artisan workshops, horse‑drawn carriages, costumed interpreters and functioning steam locomotives.

Guests can explore iconic environments such as Thomas Edison’s laboratory or ride in an authentic Model T, making it one of the country’s most engaging historical learning environments.

Together, these four ranked institutions demonstrate the Detroit area’s commitment to accessible, dynamic and meaningful cultural experiences. From hands‑on science to immersive maritime history, from America’s technological milestones to living slices of early American life, these museums offer a spectrum of educational adventures that resonate with both local families and visitors from around the country.
